On the way to Sunday … old lessons

The nursery rhyme of old goes something like this:

Here is the church.
Here is the steeple.
Open the doors
And see all the people.

The short lesson is that the church is not a building – it never has been.

Church buildings as a place or building don’t even exist until the 3rd and 4th century  some 300+ years after Pentecost and the start of the early church movement.

At some level we get that the church is the people.

We even understand that the church is really just a building or place where the people gather.  But what does that mean for us today?

Here is the hard truth (and an old lesson) that we have yet to grasp:

Church isn’t about you.

It is about God and others.

When we grasp that truth we will stop asking, “what’s in it for me?”

When we grasp that truth we will stop complaining about what we didn’t like.

When we grasp that truth we will stop saying, “somebody else should take care of that!”

When we grasp that truth we will begin to understand that we (each of us) are a gift to the church.

That’s right – You are a gift to your church.

Which means …

You are there for others … to serve … to share … to care … to love … to give.

You are there to be with the people (who are the church).

and when you begin to understand your role … you become part of the church …

… and the church can become what God intended it to be in your life too!

It’s an old lesson that needs repeated:

Here is the church.
Here is the steeple.
Open the doors
And see all the people.

I am a United Methodist Pastor and have the privilege of serving as the Senior Pastor for the church of my childhood. I preach in a place I once was an acolyte. I love to preach, but more importantly I love to teach. I firmly believe that Faith Matters and should affect how we live. This blog is a place where I come to share the randomness that is life and faith ... and the intersection of the two.

  1. My Father instilled in me that same exact philosophy when I was just a child. Pastor Rodney, you are the first person I have heard to echo that same philosophy. As you always say, what GOD wants is not a social club but for us to surrender our hearts to HIM.
